‘Grow your audience first’ is the most expensive advice on the internet.
I know because I believed it for a while. I watched my follower count like it was a stock ticker. I optimized my grid. I posted consistently for months. Very cute of me. Also: not a single check in the mail.
Here’s the thing nobody in the “build your brand first” camp wants to say out loud. An audience is not a business. An audience is a crowd. A crowd doesn’t pay your mortgage. A checkout page does.

Maggie Taylor had 1,800 followers. Eighteen hundred. I helped her generate $13.5k in sales. Not because she finally crossed some magic follower threshold. Because she had a clear offer, a clear buyer, and she made the ask. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
I see the same pattern in the DMs every week. Someone has been showing up for a year. Great content. Beautiful Canva graphics. Solid engagement. They’re about to cross 10,000 followers and they want to know if THEN it’s time to launch their offer.
And I want to say it gently but also clearly: you’ve been working for free for twelve months.
The “grow first, monetize later” strategy is designed for a different game. It works if you’re chasing brand deals. If you want a sponsor to pay you $500 to talk about protein powder, fine, chase the numbers. But if you want to sell YOUR knowledge, YOUR system, your way of doing the thing you’ve already figured out, you don’t need a bigger audience. You need one person who has the problem you solve.
One person.
News flash: the algorithm is not blocking your income.
I started Bel Cruz Builds and made sales before most people knew I existed. Not because I had a secret. Because I had a specific offer and I was not shy about making it. The difference between someone who makes money and someone who has a beautiful Instagram page is, nine times out of ten, the offer. Not the follower count. Not the aesthetic. Not the posting schedule.
So here is the move. Go make an offer today. Not next month when the new branding is done. Not after you hit 5k. Today. Pick the one thing you know how to do that someone else would pay to not figure out on their own. Price it. Put it somewhere people can click. Tell three people about it.
That is a business. The rest is marketing. And marketing works a lot better when there’s something to buy.
I want to be fair here because I’m not saying content doesn’t matter. It does. Showing up consistently builds trust. A warm audience converts better than a cold one. But the sequence matters. Offer first. Content as fuel. Not content first, offer someday.
The people selling the “build your audience first” advice? A lot of them built their audiences by selling the advice to build your audience. It’s a little recursive if you look too closely at it.
The first yes is everything.
It proves the offer works. It gives you a testimonial. It puts real money in your account. It moves you out of the content-posting lane and into the business lane. And once you have that first yes, you know exactly what to make content about, because now you know who bought and why.
So if you’ve been waiting for permission to make your offer before your numbers are “big enough,” here it is. You have it. You don’t need more followers. You need a first yes.
Build the offer. Make the ask. Let the content pull people toward something real.
